NASA has had a good year. according to Charles Bolden, NASA CEO, with initial work on the Heavy Launch System gathering momentum.
The launch platform and crawler vehicle
These programs will develop the launch and spaceflight vehicles that will provide the initial capability for crewed exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit. In particular, the Space Launch System program will develop the heavy lift vehicle that will launch the crew vehicle, other modules and cargo for deep space exploration. The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle will serve as the exploration vehicle that will carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during the space travel, and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities.
The heavy lift rocket
As well as development of the heavy rocket going smoothly, NASA engineers are working on alterations to the mobile lunch platform and integrating it with the giant crawler unit that used to transport the Shuttles to the launch site.
The Orion crew capsule
The Crew vehicle, being develops by Lockheed Martin will be ready and tested well before the scheduled maiden flight of the giant rocket in 2017, and then, if all goes well, we may see a mission to an Asteroid in the next decade, and after that a mission to Mars , maybe by 2030.
