When the Space Shuttle Atlantis returns from the International Space Station it will spell the end of a time when a magnificent machine ruled the skies and a vehicle which kept the American dram alive. It built our outpost in space and inspired millions of ordinary citizens, Astronomers and technicians, for they could hear the whispers of the Cosmos calling them, to go where no man has been before, to worlds beyond the beyond, and to visualize our journey to the Stars. The return of Atlantis At a billion US dollars a launch, the Shuttle has proved to be too expensive, and now that the International Space Station has received all scheduled components, the Obama administration has decided to rely on the Russian Soyuz and Progress vehicles to supply the station until at least 2015. The Magnificent Space Shuttle Considering the fact that the US defense budget is that of $650 billion US dollars annually, a massive overkill, scheduling NASA just 15 billion each year would have kept the Constellation program in place, and can be seen as a pathway for much debate.
